furniture biglittle series site-specific
projects |
the umasi collection is a new series of experimental furniture by wells mason. yeah, it’s different. it’s specifically designed to blur the line between furniture and sculpture, with perfect panels that collide into organic elements. the result is visually jarring and thoroughly provocative. mason only uses recycled materials for umasi, like scrap steel, used telephone poles, abandoned trampoline parts, and salvaged ship masts. so, for mason, umasi is also an adventure into the principles of sustainability, with an emphasis on recycling and repurposing the familiar. because it’s built with recycled materials that are instantly recognizable, umasi clearly comments on what we throw away. perhaps more importantly, though, umasi serves as a ready platform for other forms of biting social commentary, with references to art history, contemporary culture, and even the politics of war. please enjoy umasi. |
