this happened while we were working on this project:

a young woman was home from college for the summer vacation, and one day, she was riding around with her father on his motorcycle.  her father tells her about this crazy cat in downtown coupland and his big contemporary sculptures scattered all over his property.  he suggests they ride out to coupland and check it out.  so they ride out here, and she meets jim huntington, and she sees his work.  and she's floored, because she really likes his work, and she learns that his sculptures are in major private and public collections around the world.  so jim visits with them for a while, and she tells him that she's studying to become an architect. jim mentions what we do, and he suggests they stop by my shop. they come by, and we visit with them for a while, and we show them what we're working on.  we mention that the project is for an architect out of new york who’s doing a project in new mexico – an architect named steven holl.  her eyes got real wide.  she couldn't believe it.  turns out she's a graduate student in her third year at columbia, where steven holl teaches, and she knows all about this particular project in new mexico – because she's been hearing about it in detail for the last three years!

this was the last sort of thing she expected to find in coupland, and I think she left a little dazed.  the world done got smaller . . .
